How the Detroit Pistons can conclude their season perfectly: Keep resting the veterans

The Pistons have faced some stiff competition in the tanking department from teams like the Orlando Magic and OKC Thunder, but they’ve had a trick in their bag just in case. Thanks to the solid play of their rookie core and youngsters, they have just enough veterans with bumps and bruises on the roster to be able to sit, well, all of them.

Mason Plumlee missed five games with DNP-Rest, then played against the Philadelphia 76ers, and then got another DNP-Rest on Sunday against the Bulls. Jerami Grant has only played consecutive games once in the past five weeks, playing against the Indiana Pacers and Atlanta Hawks on April 24th and 26th, and has only played six games total in that span.

Wayne Ellington hasn’t played both ends of a back-to-back since late March, and he’s only played six games since the middle of April.

Plumlee won’t lead you to many victories, but Jerami Grant is the best player on the floor in many matchups, especially against the bottom third of the NBA right now which is all trying their best to increase their NBA draft lottery stock. Ellington scoring outbursts are directly responsible for as many as four of the Pistons’ 20 wins this season, and keeping this duo in particular off the floor as much as possible for the rest of this season is imperative.
