New Orleans Pelicans: 3 goals for the final stretch of the season
New Orleans Pelicans goal No. 3: Tighten up their perimeter defense
The Pelicans have a second problem on the perimeter, their defense. They allow 38.2 attempts from deep which is 27th in the league. Their defense is so poor that they allow 14.6 makes which places them 29th in the league.
This means the Pelicans allow 38.2 percent from deep, which is ranked 27th in the league. This speaks loudly of the Pelicans not being in sync defensively. With their personnel, they do not switch well on the perimeter.
Adams is a tremendous team defender and is a rim protector when it is required. Likewise, Williamson is also a true shot-blocker. However, if Adams switches out to the perimeter, his ability to stay in front of a guard is not great, meaning he is exposed. Williamson can also struggle a little out there.
The Pelicans have the perfect opportunity to work on their defensive schemes in the upcoming games as they are not likely to qualify for the play-in tournament. If they can do this, then they will get a head start on next season.
With six players under the age of 23, there are no wasted minutes on an NBA floor, and teaching them how to play better defense, especially on the perimeter, is just another step in their development. The Pelicans have the chance to become a special team, but it is the little effort plays on defense that will set them apart.
