OKC Thunder: 3 goals for the final stretch of the season
OKC Thunder season goal No. 3: Lose all the games
The point of this rebuild for the OKC Thunder is to get quality young players into their system. They are not a team that is able to lure many quality free agents who are good enough to make a difference. They have to groom the talent from a young age, relying on their culture to keep them.
As a result, they need to get the highest possible draft picks for the next season or two so that they can achieve this goal. To do that they need to lose as many games as they possibly can to achieve the best draft result.
The problem for the Thunder is that they need to lose while still assessing their talent and while maintaining a culture that keeps the players they want to keep. They also need to keep developing the same players at the same time.
This is a tightrope that first-year head coach Mark Daigneault needs to walk on a nightly basis. He seems to be doing a solid job of this, making the right calls and keeping his young team focussed on what is important, which is the future.
Unfortunately for the franchise, the reward for losing is going to come over the next few seasons. This means that a fanbase that is used to winning is going to have to deal with losing for the short-term future.
