Reason No. 2 Giannis is the forgotten man for the Milwaukee Bucks: Voter fatigue

There’s a price to pay when you’re a two-time MVP with no championships to show for it. This isn’t unfair, either. It’s the league’s premiere award, and greatness is both expected from and ascribed to it.

Giannis averaged 29.5 points, 13.6 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 1.0 steals and 1.0 blocks last season, and this season his numbers have largely dipped. Now he averages a pedestrian (emphasized for disingenuous sarcasm) 28.4 points, 11.2 rebounds, 6.1 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.3 blocks per game.

These numbers are essentially on part with his first MVP campaign, two seasons ago. He was a virtual lock from about the one-third mark of that season to win MVP, but he has next to no shot this season in spite of his statistical dominance and the fact that his team is comfortably in that top-three seeding that a league MVP generally needs.

If Giannis was a zero-time MVP, this conversation would be entirely different. As a two-time winner of the league’s most prestigious award with no corresponding success, however, voters likely see his winning streak as something that must be avoided at all costs.
