1. Clean books

After decades of mismanaged cap space, the New York Knicks are going to have some of the cleanest books around the NBA this coming summer. There may not be a free agent bonanza to the same degree as expected, but cap space has value nonetheless. Especially considering the waves of trades that we saw last offseason, available free agents might matter less than cap flexibility and tradeable assets.

More from New York Knicks

The Knicks will have $44 million in salaries this coming offseason, and plenty of the cap holds they have on the books will either be re-signed for significantly less or renounced. It wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility for the New York Knicks to have at least enough space for a max salary slot.

What good that might do them in an offseason with no max-caliber players remains to be seen, however, and the Knicks may simply opt to continue to develop incrementally while maintaining flexibility down the road. Either way, they have given themselves options going forward, and that’s something that the Knicks haven’t really had at their disposal until now.
