3. Front office savvy

Go back as far in the annals of history as you want, and it’s hard to find a New York Knicks team that could be considered well-run. In a recent era, Phil Jackson worked his magic and helped run this franchise into the ground. At the beginning of the millennium, Isiah Thomas did much the same.

Now former super-agent Leon Rose runs the basketball side as president of operations, and he’s displayed patience and wisdom in his decision-making. He did throw Thibodeau a bone, acquiring his former Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose from the Detroit Pistons, but Rose has avoided the temptation to make a big splash big mistake.

Rose has operated quietly, making solid moves around the margins, but barely even speaking with the media. He won’t stay quiet for long, though. With his connections to players around the NBA and the fact that New York will be a destination market as long as Madison Square Gardens is still standing, the time will come where he pushes his chips into the middle for a true star.

The opportunity hasn’t presented itself through either trade or free agency, so for now he bides his time, squandering no resources. It’s encouraging behavior that Knicks fans haven’t seen in a long, long time.
