The king of almost doing the deal, Danny Ainge, actually made a couple moves at the deadline and almost made a few more, of course. Rather than dissecting what they almost did, let’s review what moves the Boston Celtics made in reality.
Evan Fournier is a solid pick-up for the Boston Celtics, especially for the price of two future second-round picks (and Jeff Teague). Bench scoring has been an issue for the Celtics this season and Fournier will make it much easier when Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown are off the court. Fournier is averaging 19.7 points and 3.7 assists on shooting splits of .461/.388/.797. He may not be a star but he immediately makes the Celtics offense better.
The Daniel Theis trade is a little more questionable. Boston sent Daniel Theis and Javonte Green to the Chicago Bulls and received Luke Korner and Moritz Wagner. Theis was an important piece for the Celtics but this means it is time for Robert Williams to go full Time Lord and take over the starting spot. He has been the best rim protector for this team and now the minutes limitations are likely out the door, unless buyout rumors are true.
As always, the Boston Celtics are reportedly interested in big names. This year they are making calls to get meetings with Andre Drummond and LaMarcus Aldridge. However, Aldridge has already signed with the Brooklyn Nets and it doesn’t look like Drummond is interested in joining the Celtics.
