Patrick Beverley

The LA Clippers find themselves in a complicated situation. They have two superstars who believe they should be contending for a championship. They have the talent to be an elite team on both ends of the ball while currently ranking third in offensive rating and 15th in defensive rating. The Clippers noticeably struggle in late-game situations due to the lack of a true playmaker. Because they are hard-capped, making any sort of meaningful trade addition would require losing a meaningful rotation player.

Therefore, it came down to choosing between Patrick Beverley and Lou Williams. Beverley is the choice solely because he makes more money, thus allowing the Clippers slightly more wiggle room to work with under the cap in a move. Beverley has been dealing with a knee injury of late and has never been a sizeable statistical contributor.

Defense is Beverley’s calling card and he is still performing admirably on that end of the ball. For players playing at least 20 minutes per game, Beverley ranks 15th (104.9) in rating, better than notable names like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons. Beverley certainly has value but if the Clippers are to add playmaking to assist with their late-game struggles, they will need to give up value to get some in return.
