John Collins

Just because he has been the most talked-about name so far, that does not mean it is without warrant. John Collins and the Atlanta Hawks have been due for a breakup for much of the season and their recent winning ways have not changed the fact that a max contract coming his way this summer is an obstacle for the organization.

Collins is continuing to improve, and the Hawks should absolutely consider him a part of their future. He is developing as a defensive player and an impressive secondary scoring option. He is averaging 18.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.1 blocks per game with shooting splits of .538/.377/.846. He is on the path to being an elite offensive big man and being paired with a defensive center (i.e. Clint Capela or Onyeka Okongwu) bodes well for his development.

However, if the relationship with Trae Young is bad, as reported, then all of the development is moot. Young is the face of the franchise and (perhaps more importantly) the one who was drafted by Travis Schlenk to be the face of the franchise. Collins should have no shortage of suitors. If the Hawks are willing to part with him now they should be able to add an impact player to the roster that is currently surging under Nate McMillan.
