Doug McDermott

The Indiana Pacers are treacherously expensive for a team currently on the outside of the playoffs looking in. Much of their struggles have come due to injuries wreaking havoc on the roster but nonetheless, rumors abound that most Pacers could be had for the right price. Still, Doug McDermott feels like the most likely player to be moved.

McDermott has been very solid in his third season with the team, averaging 13.4 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game, all career-highs. He is shooting 37.3 percent from distance and would be a solid reserve scorer for a team not currently struggling to make the postseason. Furthermore, as the roster gets healthier, his role is likely to be squeezed by T.J. Warren and Caris LeVert.

It is unlikely Indiana will be able to afford the raise McDermott is due this summer. Adding a third large contract in LeVert to an increasingly expensive roster made that reality all the more likely.

The Pacers have thrived for decades by flipping useful players before they lose them in free agency. Doing so with McDermott would hurt in the short term but is the wise move for the continued progression of this roster. This is especially true given the relative issue that moving on from Jeremy Lamb could be due to the extra year remaining on his contract.
