Question: How long can this last before Scott Brooks gets let go?
The realistic answer to this question is the end of the season and then Scott Brooks answers for the disappointment that this season has been for the Washington Wizards. They still obviously have time to make a push for the play-in. After trading for Russell Westbrook, the expectations had to be higher than being this far under .500 at this point in the season.
Injuries and COVID-19 have played their part in the disappointments so far, but Brooks has left a lot to be desired in terms of game planning. The consistency is not there from a game-to-game basis and the never-ending rumor mill surrounding Bradley Beal makes the situation even direr.
There is not much long game here. For better or worse, trading for Russell Westbrook means that making the playoffs is the bare minimum. Anything less than that will result in changes. Westbrook should be unmovable. Beal wants to stay. Tommy Sheppard has not been there long enough to accrue all that blame. This is Scott Brooks’s time to prove himself.
The back end of the schedule is brutal so this will not be easy. However, the talent was starting to gel before the All-Star Break. Rui Hachimura has taken a step forward in his second season, especially on defense. Garrison Matthews is a key rotation player. There is something to work with here.
