Big front lines in the Eastern Conference

Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid is playing the best basketball of his life. At the halfway point of the season, he’s the leading candidate for league MVP. Whenever he needs a breather from the pounding his 7’2″ frame takes during the course of the game, Doc Rivers has the luxury of inserting former Defensive Player of the Year Dwight Howard into the game to replace him.

Meanwhile, the Brooklyn Nets may have just made the biggest mid-season acquisition of the season when they signed recently released veteran Blake Griffin. Pairing him with fellow Lob-City alumni DeAndre Jordan, Brooklyn’s front line is big and physical. One look at the other contenders in the Eastern Conference and it’s clear that the ability to bang in the paint and grab rebounds will be of increased importance in the playoffs.

The most physical players on the Milwaukee Bucks roster are Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis. Brook Lopez still has the ability to play physical and clash with other centers, but he’s less inclined to do so at this stage of his career. If Milwaukee happens to run into Philadelphia or Brooklyn this post season, Andre Drummond’s physical presence along with the six extra fouls he possesses could come in very handy. Without him, the Bucks will be at a decided disadvantage in the paint.

Milwaukee Bucks fans aren’t just hoping for a championship this season, they believe their year has finally arrived. The front office should be given credit for having a productive off-season. However, the team still looks to be one piece away from being able to get over the hump. An elite rebounder an interior defender could be just what the team needs to bring home their first championship since 1971. Cleveland wants to be compensated for losing their star big man; Milwaukee’s front office needs to pick up the phone and make them an offer they can’t refuse.
