Detroit Pistons: 3 instant takeaways from the OKC Thunder trade
By Duncan Smith
3. Will the Detroit Pistons make more moves at the NBA trade deadline?
The Pistons have been hyper-active in the trade market so far since the offseason, trading players for re-packaging purposes in three or four-team deals, or for waiving and stretching purposes, or for adding players to their collective.
If there’s one thing we’ve learned about Troy Weaver so far this season, it’s that he is relentlessly aggressive with the given tools at his disposal. Right now, the trade deadline is one of those tools.
The Pistons have a handful of pieces on their roster right now that are desirable to contenders, primarily Delon Wright and Wayne Ellington. Recent moves have made them a bit more expendable, with Dennis Smith Jr.’s stock rising at the point guard spot, and now Hamidou Diallo provides some additional depth on the wing in Ellington’s spot.
The point guard spot, in particular, has gotten highly competitive with Smith and Saben Lee battling for minutes there, and rookie Killian Hayes set to return in a week or two. As for the wing role that Ellington occupies, Diallo and Josh Jackson both can fill it more than adequately, although neither of them are anything near the shooter that Ellington is.
Not that Weaver needs any encouragement to make trades, but his moves have put them in a great position to be able to flip those two players for more assets.
