Boston Celtics: Evaluating their young players at the mid-way point
Carsen Edwards
There hasn’t been much talk surrounding Carsen Edwards since his impressive (but outdated) Summer League performance during his rookie season last year. Since then, the once referred to sharpshooter has been a disappointment thus far.
Fortunately for the Boston Celtics, Edwards has been rather successful during his time with the Maine Red Claws last season. In doing so, Edwards averaged 22.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game in 13 games.
The Celtics have hope that Edwards can become a spark off the bench and provide high energy to the team on the offensive end. But until he proves to be able to do so, and with the depth the Celtics have at the position, it’s going to be hard for Edwards to earn meaningful minutes this season.
Perhaps there is a team out there that is willing to take a chance on Edwards should the Celtics try to use him in a trade negotiation.
Tremont Waters
There should be a great deal of excitement about the potential of Tremont Waters and what he can become in the near future for the Boston Celtics even on another two-way contract for the second time in as many years.
Waters was a star in the G-League during his rookie season. In 36 games he averaged 18 points, 3.2 rebounds, 7.3 assists, and 1.9 steals per game en route to becoming the G-League’s Rookie of the Year in 2020.
He has all of the skills and abilities to compete in the NBA and the Celtics know that, regardless of how unappealing the sounds of a two-way contract is perceived.
Due to injuries early on this season, Waters was able to log in his first start of the season for the Celtics against the Toronto Raptors and finished the night with five points, two rebounds, and five assists in 24 minutes.
Considering the emergence of rookie guard Payton Pritchard, Waters is unlikely to see much time on the floor this season.
