Zach LaVine’s All-Star selection

Legendary coach Phil Jackson once said, “If you give the future all your attention, the present will pass you by.” Billy Donovan seems to have the right balance between grooming the Bulls for future success while recognizing that he currently has a special talent on the roster named Zach LaVine. While prioritizing winning, Donovan has also made sure to encourage his young star to continue his individual growth as a player.

Last season’s rumors that LaVine was unhappy in Chicago have gone completely by the wayside. He and Donovan clearly trust one another and LaVine has flourished under his newfound freedom. Players who feel empowered to perform excel. Those who feel underappreciated underachieve. It’s a concept that has stood the test of time.

At the beginning of the season, Zach LaVine stated he one of his goals was to become a first-time All-Star. Instead of bulking at the idea of his best player publicly acknowledging an individual goal, Billy Donovan chose to be supportive. Teamwork is a part of every profession, but there’s never been a success story without an internal desire for greatness. LaVine deserves the credit for putting in the work to become an All-Star. Donovan should be applauded for helping him get there.
