64. . Shooting Guard. Detroit Pistons. Anthony Edwards. 7. player

2020 NBA Lottery Redraft, Pick No. 7: Anthony Edwards, Georgia

It’s been mentioned a few times to this point, but Anthony Edwards has not been a good NBA player to start his career. He has been a high-usage chucker who doesn’t bring any elite skills to the table outside of his athleticism.

Yet there are still flashes of greatness, times when he uses his explosion to get to the rim and finish. If he can improve his accuracy he has the handle and gumption to shoot 3-pointers off the dribble. His size and speed should translate into a plus defensive player at some point if he tries on that end. The upside is higher by far than anyone else left on the board, and so here the Detroit Pistons finally take the swing.

Team Fit: Long-term pieces on the Detroit Pistons right now include Jerami Grant and…possibly no one else. While they have hope in a couple of 2020 draft selections, here they get a redo with the seventh pick and swing for the fences. Early on Edwards makes a good fit with Delon Wright, and if he turns into something approaching his upside the Pistons have an offensive engine to pair with Grant.

What’s Changed? Edwards dropped because of his damaging play thus far, but why would the Pistons take him over their original pick? Simply put, point guard Killian Hayes was worse than Edwards to start the year before he suffered an injury. Without the pedigree or elite upside of Edwards, he is bumped from his spot.
