2020 NBA Lottery Redraft, Pick No. 6: Devin Vassell, Florida State

One player outperforming his draft slot to this point has been Devin Vassell, originally selected by the San Antonio Spurs at 11th. The former Florida State wing has not exploded into a future star, but rather has proven he can be elite in a very valuable role.

3-and-D players are always in high demand, and Vassell is already a useful version of that archetype. He has shot 39.7 percent from 3-point range on 6.7 attempts per 100 possessions, and among rookies with at least 100 minutes played he ranks first in Defensive Box Plus-Minus. For the franchise of “very solid” he has been “very solid” out of the gates.

Team Fit: The Atlanta Hawks have their point guard, and they have their center in Clint Capela. Between them is a cornucopia of options, all offering different skill sets and ways of fitting together. The beauty of a player such as Vassell is that he fits in with any of them. The Hawks could go large and slot Vassell at the 2 alongside Young, or go smaller and place him at the 3. Vassell will likely never make an All-Star Game, but he will be a coveted player nonetheless.

What’s Changed? The Hawks originally took USC center Onyeka Okongwu, and he still looks like a fine player and a decent pick. He has played just six games due to injury but seems similar to what was expected. On a team that already has a center under contract in Clint Capela, taking a useable wing is a better value proposition. Vassell has earned his way up the draft board.
