2020 NBA Lottery Redraft, Pick No. 4: Patrick Williams, Florida State

Our first pick of the redraft that mirrors the actual draft. Just like in the November draft, the Bulls at pick four are an inflection point after a clear top-three. They go again with Patrick Williams, a player who came off the bench for Florida State in college but has the NBA body teams covet. Offensively he has been an unpolished work in progress.

Defensively Williams has been better, often taking on the task of defending the opposing team’s best forward. The Bulls have struggled to find consistency with the team’s other young backcourt players — Lauri Markkanen and Wendell Carter Jr. — out much of the year with injuries. Williams may flame out, he may grow into a star, but his size and tools give him the upside to keep him high in the redraft.

Team Fit: The Bulls have a lot of question marks across the roster. Should they move on from Zach LaVine at the 2? Can Coby White be an above-average starter at point guard? The frontcourt is likewise in flux, with no certainty on whether Markkanen and Carter are the answer. Williams gives them another option, one who could be the long-term 3 if he develops his offensive portfolio, or replace Markkanen if the Bulls decide to move on after this year.

What’s Changed? For the Bulls the same logic that led them to take Williams originally applies here as well. The only difference in the equation is that Anthony Edwards is available in this redraft, but his general inefficiency combined with the presence of LaVine means they were able to stick with their original pick.
