NBA Draft: New player at the top of the 2020 NBA Lottery Redraft
2020 NBA Lottery Redraft, Pick No. 14: Desmond Bane, TCU
Desmond Bane was one of the analytics darlings coming into the draft, a high-end shooter with the possible outline of something more. He has absolutely delivered on the shooter part, hitting 48.2 percent of his 85 3-pointers thus far this season. He trails just Tyrese Haliburton in effective field goal percentage among rookies (minimum 100 minutes) and no one in 3-point percentage (minimum 30 attempts).
Has he brought the “something more” yet? It’s still just a vague outline, but he has shown some verve inside the arc and is at least moving the ball when he doesn’t shoot, with a respectable 9.8 assist percentage as a low-usage wing. He’s hanging in on defense, and has one of the better rookie net ratings at a flat “0”. The Memphis Grizzlies are getting significant value from the last pick of the first round.
Team Fit: On the Boston Celtics, Bane would immediately come in as the bench shooter they desperately need. Outside of Payton Pritchard their bench players are all more comfortable scoring from close to the basket. In Bane they would have a player to space the floor and open up space inside for Grant and Robert Williams to work.
What’s Changed? Boston went after that same type of player in Aaron Nesmith, but in limited minutes coming off of an injury Nesmith has hit just 10 of his 33 total attempts from deep (30.3 percent). With two months of data under their belt they can get the player they wanted Nesmith to be (and granted he may still get there). Bane is a surer bet and can help a team now that wants to contend in the Eastern Conference. After the top three, this was the easiest pick in the entire lottery redraft.
