Too many guards on the roster

The Chicago Bulls have seven players besides Denzel Valentine who are listed as guards. While ball-handling and perimeter play is vital in today’s NBA, there is clearly a logjam at the guard position in the Windy City. Someone has to go.

Besides Zach LaVine and Coby White, the rest of Chicago’s guards are trying to impress Donovan to establish their place in the rotation. Valentine is a veteran who’s proven he belongs in the NBA. He should not be forced to compete for limited minutes. His talents would be better served in a franchise that has a clearly defined role ready for him upon arrival.

Warren Buffett once said, “In the business world, the rear-view mirror is always clearer than the windshield.” When the Bulls look back on their time with Denzel Valentine, they’ll see a consummate professional who bounced back from injury to become a reliable veteran.

There is nothing wrong with that narrative. The problem is the road ahead is much more uncertain. Valentine’s health and trade value are better than they’ve been in a long time. Unfortunately, that means it’s time for the franchise to move him and head in a different direction.
