Third thing Derrick Rose trade brings to the New York Knicks – Predicament in the point guard rotation

The New York Knicks have a predicament at the point guard position, and Derrick Rose does not help fix it in the slightest. In fact, he only complicates it further.

To the dismay of many fans, the Knicks have been rolling with veteran Elfird Payton at the starting point guard position, giving him 28.5 minutes a night. Behind him in the rotation is 21-year-old rookie Immanuel Quickley, getting just 18.9 minutes per game. Quickley has shown significant potential off the bench, which has many clamoring for the team to potentially move Payton before the deadline to open the starting spot for the youngster.

Instead, the Knicks have brought in another veteran point guard that is a favorite for the head coach. The biggest question surrounding this trade, also its most controversial aspect, is whether Quickley will receive even fewer minutes now with Rose in the lineup. The rookie has been fantastic throughout his 21 appearances this season, and fans can only keep their fingers crossed that this move does not stunt his development.

The best-case scenario here would be for the Knicks to go through with trading Payton, and apparently, that could be an option. According to SNY’s Ian Begley, at least “one team in playoff contention has shown interest in Elfrid Payton. After dealing for Derrick Rose, the Knicks aren’t done on the trade market just yet.”

Clearing out the point guard room by dealing Payton would certainly make this move far more justifiable for everyone, and it could only be a matter of time before it becomes a reality. Until then, these rotational issues will continue to come into question.
