Coby White excels at finding the open man

There was a time when pass-first point guards like John Stockton and Jason Kidd were the norm. However, in the modern NBA point guards who prioritize assists or points have become rare. That’s why the 5.7 assists per game that Coby White is averaging this season are more impressive when put into context.

Although he’s the off-guard, Zach LaVine easily has the highest usage rate on the team. That means that despite limited opportunities to create shots for his teammates, White is still averaging almost six assists per night. Young point guards are often criticized for not getting their teammates involved enough but those rumblings have not been heard coming from Chicago.

Unselfish play and ball movement are contagious. Dating back to his days at the helm of the Florida Gators, Billy Donovan has been known to emphasize a balanced offensive attack. Under this guidance, Coby White has turned himself into a dual threat. It’s just as common to see him make the right play and find a teammate in stride for an easy bucket as it to see him create a shot for himself.

Being able to score and create for others constantly keeps the defenses guessing. It’s just one of the reasons White has been a great fit alongside LaVine in Chicago’s back-court this season.
