50 greatest NBA players from the 1990s — 49. Kevin McHale

Kevin McHale had been a fixture with the Celtics through almost all of the 1980s and had enough left in the tank entering the 1990s to earn two more All-Star berths—his sixth and seventh—and an All-Defensive nod in 1989-90.

For the fading dynasty in the early 1990s, McHale averaged 16.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.5 blocks in 28.3 minutes per game, shooting .525/.292/.856.

He retired immediately following Boston’s elimination from the 1993 playoffs.

McHale was named to the NBA’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team in 1997 and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999.

Since retirement, McHale spent 13+ years running the Minnesota Timberwolves and served two stints as the team’s interim coach. He has coached the Houston Rockets since 2011.
