Assessing Jerami Grant’s trade value for the Detroit Pistons

Jerami Grant bet on himself this offseason, joining the Detroit Pistons as a free agent. He wanted an expanded role, one which wouldn’t be available to him with the Denver Nuggets behind Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray, and he wanted to play for a Black general manager in Troy Weaver and a Black head coach in Dwane Casey.

Detroit afforded him the opportunity to do both, and he’s taken advantage of it in every way. He’s been phenomenal and proven he was right to believe in himself, and that Troy Weaver was right to trust him.

The Pistons have lost plenty of games and surely Grant would prefer to have won more, but he was under no illusions when he left a Western Conference Finalist to come join a team starting over from scratch. He demonstrated a long view the likes of which we don’t often see in the NBA either from teams or players.

If and when the Pistons do bounce back into the realm of the contenders, Jerami Grant will be “The Guy”, and when he joined this organization he allowed them to jump the awkward phase of trying to find a good veteran to join a rebuild. Jerami Grant is in on the ground floor of this thing.

Other teams might sniff around and see if the Pistons will bite on anything, but you don’t take a guy like Grant, who has made one of the ultimate gambles that a player can, and flip him to some other nameless team for some draft picks and assorted things.

Lock this one in stone.
