5 reasons why the Orlando Magic should sign Isaiah Thomas
4. Isaiah Thomas would serve as an influential mentor for rookie Cole Anthony
The Magic drafted Cole Anthony out of the University of North Carolina with the 15th pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. For what it’s worth, his abilities are very similar to those of Isaiah Thomas.
Although Anthony stands taller than the 5’9” guard at 6’2″, they’re both relatively small point guards that are offense-oriented. Some may argue that that could be a reason for the Magic to not sign Isaiah Thomas or another similar offensive-minded guard, but it could also be seen through the point of view of having someone mentor the rookie on and off the court while contributing to the team.
Cole Anthony is a 20-year-old still settling into NBA life. Having a veteran role model who plays the same position and possesses a similar skill set could be an influential stepping stone for his career moving forward. In fact, the rookie is on track to post very similar numbers to IT’s rookie season.
If the Magic were to sign Isaiah Thomas, Cole Anthony would also benefit from his presence.
5. Low-risk, high-reward for the Orlando Magic
Signing Isaiah Thomas would be a low-risk, high-reward scenario for the Orlando Magic.
It wouldn’t cost much to add Thomas to the team, and the Magic are currently under the luxury tax with available exceptions at their dispense. Financially, adding another minimum contract salary to the books shouldn’t be a problem for Orlando.
Isaiah and his representatives would most likely accept a contract offer around the veteran’s minimum. All he seems to want is an opportunity to play in the league again, so money shouldn’t be an issue on his side. That’s what makes his value so eye-opening.
The Magic don’t have to sacrifice much to invest in Thomas. If they do, it has the potential to serve as an efficient stock that helps pay dividends throughout the rest of the season.
Given the circumstances, signing Isaiah Thomas makes complete sense for the Orlando Magic.
