Milwaukee Bucks: 3 reasons Bobby Portis is excelling off the bench
Bobby Portis has been efficient
If a starter misses an open shot, the coach will clap his hands and say something to the effect of “that’s a good look, keep shooting.” If a role player misses an open shot the coach will wait to see if the next one goes in before deciding whether or not to pull him. Players off the bench don’t have as much leeway as starters. That’s why efficiency and making the most of opportunities is of the utmost importance.
Through 10 games, Bobby Portis is shooting 54.2 percent from the field while averaging 11.0 points per game. He’s also been reliable at the charity stripe, knocking down 80.0 percent of his free throws. Not only is he taking and making good shots, his team can trust that if he’s fouled in the act he’ll make the other team pay by knocking down both freebies.
In the modern NBA the term stretch-four is tossed around so often that it’s no longer a novelty. Bobby Portis is showing signs of being able to fill this role if called upon. He hasn’t been shy about taking open 3-pointers if defenders back off of him, daring him to shoot. Through ten games, he hoisted up twenty shots from beyond the arc. He’s made eight of them. If he continues hitting them at this rate, he’ll be a remarkable 40 percent on the year. That’s a big if, but it’s worth noting.
