Brooklyn Nets: 3 free agents to target with their Disabled Player Exception
By Dalton Sell
Free agent target No. 1 – Andre Roberson
Andre Roberson is a player that has a similar reputation to Rondae Hollis-Jefferson. Both are defensive specialists in their own right, and although they have minimal tools in their offensive arsenal, either would be a good fit for the Brooklyn Nets.
Roberson has struggled with injury for the past several years, having played in just 46 games over the past three seasons due to a torn left patellar tendon. Finally healthy, the swingman made his long-awaited return to the court for the OKC Thunder during the NBA’s restart last season. It was fantastic to see the 29-year-old get back onto the court after enduring his bout with injury. However, Roberson went unsigned this offseason, and he remains waiting for his next opportunity.
It did not help Roberson that he played in just eight total games last year, one of which was a postseason game for just three minutes. That small sample size left teams deterred from signing him this offseason, but the Brooklyn Nets should inquire about potentially inking him to a deal. At his best, Roberson was an All-NBA defender in 2016-17, and although he has likely lost a step, the Nets are in the market for defenders. If Roberson can be a shell of his defensive self to give them some help on the perimeter or defending the opposing team’s wings, he is worth the call.
Nets star Kevin Durant is also a former teammate of Roberson’s with the OKC Thunder and someone who he has spoken highly of in the past. In fact, in 2018, Durant labeled Roberson as “probably the best” defender in the entire league. It was some high praise from the former league MVP and could persuade the Brooklyn Nets to sign Andre Roberson with their newly acquired DPE to strengthen their defensive play.
