Brooklyn Nets: 3 free agents to target with their Disabled Player Exception
By Dalton Sell
The Brooklyn Nets have been granted a $5.7 million Disabled Player Exception for the loss of Spencer Dinwiddie that they can use to improve the roster.
Spencer Dinwiddie’s injury is a substantial blow for the Brooklyn Nets.
Fresh off a career-year with Brooklyn in 2019-20, Dinwiddie was promoted to full-time starter this season on the team’s star-studded roster. Unfortunately, Dinwiddie suffered a partially torn ACL in his right knee in the team’s recent 106-104 loss to the Charlotte Hornets, just their third game of the season.
He has since undergone surgery to repair it, and thankfully, he will reportedly make a full recovery. Still, the Nets will be without their starting shooting guard for likely the remainder of the season, which is undoubtedly a massive loss for them in the grand scheme of things.
Following the injury, the Brooklyn Nets were granted a $5.7 million Disabled Player Exception. That allows them to trade for a player in the final year of their deal or sign a player within that price range, but they must also make a roster spot available. That leaves Brooklyn with an endless amount of possibilities to bolster their roster, and although they have no reason to rush and utilize their DPE, it is an asset that could help them immediately.
One area they should look to improve is the defense. Brooklyn’s imperfections on that end have hindered them in the early going this season. That should have the Brooklyn Nets scouring the market for experienced defenders that are ready to contribute on a championship-caliber team. If so, here are three current free agents that the Brooklyn Nets should target using their newly acquired $5.7 million Disabled Player Exception.
