Minnesota’s defense was stunning against the Jazz

For years and years, the one criticism that has stuck with the Timberwolves, the one they have never seemed to be able to solve, is that they were horrible on defense. And the numbers go to show it. Minnesota was the 16th-ranked defense last season and 17th in defensive rebound percentage.

Though it’s still too early to get a completely accurate read on this sort of thing this year, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Among teams from their opening game, Minnesota ranked fourth in defensive rating. Through nearly the first week, Minnesota ranks seventh. Those aren’t horrible standings, by any means, and with an offensive as powerful as the Timberwolves’, it could prove to be what puts Minnesota in the playoffs.

It doesn’t seem like this is a fluke either. Many times during their game with the Jazz, Minnesota looked to be in control on the defensive end. They forced Utah into shooting 38.3 percent from the field and 29.4 percent from 3-point range. Minnesota ended up with 19 forced turnover, nine steals, and five blocks.

The defensive acumen displayed so far, especially against a dangerous offensive team like the Jazz, could do a lot to push Minnesota to that next level. However, with a shortened season, it’s more important than ever that the Timberwolves do not allow themselves to slack for one second on defense. If they do, a tough Western Conference could send them packing to the lottery once again.
