San Antonio Spurs: The good, bad and unknown from win over Memphis
By Ethan Becker
The San Antonio Spurs grabbed a commanding win in their season opener against the Memphis Grizzlies. What are some of the biggest takeaways from this game?
After a relatively short turnaround from the end of the bubble-era to the beginning of the 2020-2021 draft and free agency, the San Antonio Spurs finally opened their regular season on the road against the Memphis Grizzlies. After trailing for the first quarter, San Antonio came back, took a big lead, and ended up with a 131-119 victory.
A commanding win over a presumptive playoff team is always a good sign, especially when it’s your first game back and there’s likely a little rust on the players, and this time is no different. Of course, the Grizzlies were hurting without Jaren Jackson Jr. and Justise Winslow in their rotation (both due to injuries that they suffered last season), but Memphis still came out with a lot of firepower and the Spurs were able to weather the storm for a good start to the season.
But the most important part of any victory, and of any game really, is understanding what went right and what went wrong. And despite the seeming blowout on the scoreboard, there were a lot of problems that cropped up in this game. Luckily for San Antonio, those problems were outweighed by a lot of positives too.
To learn from this, and possibly continue to grow through the season, the Spurs need to figure out how to fix what went wrong and how to continue doing what went right. But what were those things? What are some of the biggest talking points of this game?
