The 2020-21 NBA season is officially here – and it will provide clarity for the Cleveland Cavaliers who have yet to find a stable direction.

10 months after their season was cut short by an ongoing pandemic, the Cleveland Cavaliers make their official return to the floor on Wednesday versus the Charlotte Hornets. This game marks the start of a season that will determine the foreseeable future of the franchise.

The Cavaliers have been attempting to rebuild for three seasons now – and though they have a collection of young assets to work with, the team is still projected to finish towards the bottom of league standings again. No one is predicting the Cavaliers to be a playoff contender. And, even if multiple players perform above expectations, it’s still likely they find themselves somewhere in the NBA Draft Lottery.

This upcoming season shouldn’t be judged by the Cavaliers’ win count. Instead, we should focus on the mini-breakthroughs this team is sure to have along the way. For key players like Collin Sexton and Darius Garland, this season will offer an opportunity to establish themselves one way or another.

As for the remaining vets on the team, we will likely see both Kevin Love and Andre Drummond be featured in trade rumors all year long. Shipping both of them at some point in the season would bring closure and allow the franchise to finally commit to a full-time rebuild, focused solely on their young core.

It’s clear Cleveland has a number of lingering questions that are holding them back from taking the next step in the rebuild. These x-factors have been on our mind all year long and they should finally be resolved throughout the course of their 2020-21 NBA campaign.
