Detroit Pistons preseason grades: The good, the bad and the ugly
By Duncan Smith
The Detroit Pistons put the preseason in the books and will soon begin their regular season. Let’s take a look at how the players graded out the preseason.
The Detroit Pistons wrapped up a low-scoring preseason, finishing with the 29th ranked offense in the exhibition stage. They scored just 91.0 points per 100 possessions and never broke 100 points in a game, even though they played two games against last season’s second-worst defense in the Washington Wizards.
Of course, this isn’t going to be a very good team this year, and offense certainly won’t be the side of the ball that gets the most attention around the league. While they didn’t score much, they also didn’t give up much on the scoreboard. In fact, they allowed just 89.1 points per 100 possessions and finished the preseason with the best defense.
You can only take away so much from four preseason games, but let’s remember it’s the first four games the Pistons have played since March, so you bet we’re going to micro-analyze things. The Pistons turned over nearly the entire roster with just four players returning from last season’s squad, and they brought in four rookies, including Killian Hayes, Isaiah Stewart, Saddiq Bey and Saben Lee.
It’s a team full of new faces and young players, so we’ll get caught up on just how each of the main cast of characters performed in their four games. For our purposes here, we’ll just focus on the featured players and nobody who averaged under 10 minutes per game will be addressed. And naturally, nobody who didn’t make the team out of camp will be addressed either.
We’ll group these players in tiers, starting with the best performers.
