Stephen Curry is eligible for a three-year, $155.7 million extension with the Golden State Warriors. Here are three reasons why he should sign it.
The Golden State Warriors have been on a tear of success over the past decade, reaching five-straight NBA Finals and winning three titles. That success has been driven by the unique, elite play of sharpshooting guard Stephen Curry. The son of an NBA sharpshooter in Dell Curry, the son has eclipsed the father and won two MVPs over the course of his career.
The Warriors are now figuring out a new chapter in the life of their franchise. Curry has been there through three such chapters: laughingstock, young up-and-comers finding their stride, and dynastic title favorites. Now the team mixes title-winning veterans with extremely inexperienced pieces to find a new path forward.
Last season was a lost one for both Curry (five games played) and the Warriors, who finished with the league’s worst record. This year the goal is the postseason, but can’t be aimed much higher due to the second consecutive season-ending injury for All-NBA guard Klay Thompson. As it stands Curry, the league’s highest-paid player, will be under contract for just one more season after this one.
Because of his contract length, he is eligible to sign an extension with the Warriors for three years and $155.7 million. That would tack onto the end of his current deal and keep him with the team until the 2024-25 NBA season. Curry recently spoke to the media and referenced that extension talks had happened, at least on some level.
Should the former MVP sign the extension with the Warriors? While there are benefits to waiting, including getting a fourth-year tacked on if he waits until the next offseason, the primary question is if Curry wants to commit to this organization for what amounts to the remainder of his time as a star-level player. Here are three reasons that he should sign the extension and remain a Warrior for the rest of his career.
