Golden State Warriors DPE trade target No. 3 – Lou Williams

The Golden State Warriors brought in backup floor general Brad Wanamaker during free agency, who is a serviceable piece in the second unit. However, the Warriors will need a scoring boost off the bench, and three-time Sixth Man of the Year Lou Williams, who is also the all-time leader in bench points scored, could be a compelling fit.

Although he did not win, Williams had another stellar season where he finished in the running for Sixth Man honors, having averaged 18.2 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game. Now, the guard is currently set to make an expiring $8 million next season, and some believe that he might not play it out with the LA Clippers. Per the New York Times’ Marc Stein:

"“The additions of Ibaka and Luke Kennard (via trade with Detroit) are just the beginning; many rival teams also expect the Clippers to trade Lou Williams in their quest to create a fresh-start environment after they blew a 3-1 series lead to the Nuggets.”"

If there is any truth to these rumors, the Golden State Warriors would be a compelling fit for Williams. The 34-year-old would provide an essential spark off the bench offensively and strengthen their second unit with an experienced veteran. Williams’ expiring contract fits under the $9.3 million disabled player exception, and he should be a strong candidate to elevate this team’s bench if he is indeed available in trade discussions.
