Detroit Pistons starting lineup: Locks, fringe, and potential break-ins
By Duncan Smith
Detroit Pistons possible break-ins
There’s room for the youth movement to take over in the starting lineup.
Sekou Doumbouya
It’s worth noting that if Sekou Doumbouya finds himself starting, some kind of disaster has likely happened. Either Blake Griffin gets hurt or Jerami Grant is ineffective or injured, but it’s not clear if there’s a path to the starting lineup for Doumbouya based on his own merits. Don’t forget that Weaver has already swept out a number of young rotational pieces with upside, but ties to previous Piston administrations, so disabuse yourself of the notion that Doumbouya is safe on this roster.
Saddiq Bey
There’s so much uncertainty in the backcourt, it’s not inconceivable that even rookie Saddiq Bey might find himself starting at the two. It’s not likely, mind you, especially considering the aforementioned quick turnaround to training camp and the NBA season, but we can’t overlook the possibility that Bey might shoot his way right into the mix.
Josh Jackson
Josh Jackson may have a similar path to starting in the backcourt to Saddiq Bey, but he could also have an outside shot to start at the three if (like with Doumbouya) all hell breaks loose surrounding Jerami Grant. It’s the most unlikely of the fringe trio, but it should be considered to be on the table in these early uncertain days.
