Detroit Pistons: When will Killian Hayes start at point guard?
By Duncan Smith
Will Killian Hayes play off the ball for the Detroit Pistons?
There remains another option for the Detroit Pistons if they just really want to get Killian Hayes into the mix. That option is to start Hayes at the two alongside Derrick Rose (or perhaps Delon Wright).
This takes the ball out of his hands, which removes much of what weaponizes him on the court. He’s not a great shooter (not yet at least), but he is a phenomenal playmaker and that’s what set him apart in this draft class.
So this isn’t an ideal option if indeed they want to utilize him in a way that can impact winning, but if they want a vet on the floor running the show, this might be a direction Dwane Casey ends up leaning towards.
Ultimately, I believe Hayes will end up starting at either the one or the two before the end of the season, and on purpose rather than as an emergency replacement. Whether it’s before the trade deadline remains to be seen, but it would be most surprising if he begins the season as the starting point guard or off-guard.
