With the Portland Trail Blazers signing Carmelo Anthony for the 2020-21 season it is time to take a look at three goals for next season.

When Carmelo Anthony signed with the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2019-20 season, they were a match made for each other. Anthony had been blamed for the poor showing of the OKC Thunder and Houston Rockets, losing his spot in the league. The Blazers had too many injured players.

Anthony showed that he could work as a third option within a new team environment. He averaged 15.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 0.8 assists in 32.8 minutes per game. Anthony started all 58 games that he played in for the season.

A hallmark of Anthony’s season was his efficiency. His shooting splits were really good for a 17-year veteran. He went .430/.385/.845, which as a third option is extremely solid. In fact, his 3-point number was the second-best career number for a full season.

How the Portland Trail Blazers roster additions impact Carmelo Anthony

When the Blazers signed Anthony last season they had no option, they needed a scorer. This offseason, they have addressed that need in so many ways that it was possible that they did not even sign Anthony.

He could have tried his luck with another franchise and the Blazers could have just moved on with their current crop of free-agent signings. However, both Anthony and the Blazers are loyal and there was no doubt that they were going to look after each other.

It is most probable that Anthony has lost his starting job though. When the Blazers traded for Robert Covington they got themselves one of the best 3-and-D wings in the game. When Zach Collins comes back he is a strong chance of resuming his starting role.

Even Rodney Hood will probably move ahead in the rotation and Enes Kanter will provide scoring and rebounding from the bench. But Anthony will still be a solid bench scorer as well. He is still an incredibly talented player who can’t be held quiet for long. With all this in mind, let’s look at Carmelo Anthony’s three goals for the 2020-21 season.
