No. 1 Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics were sandwiched between the 28th ranked Houston Rockets, and 30th ranked Portland Trail Blazers in bench points this season, coming in at 28.5 per game. This predicament worsened in the postseason as the team relied on their starters the most out of any playoff team, with their reserves having averaged just 12.2 minutes and 18.2 points per game across 17 contests.

Boston’s bench scoring was clearly among the weakest components of their roster this past season, and they will need to strengthen it this offseason to make another run for an NBA title next year.

The departure of Gordon Hayward only illuminates this issue further, as it will likely make Marcus Smart a full-time starter, leaving Boston’s bench dry. The team made some solid free agent acquisitions by bringing in Jeff Teague and Tristan Thompson, but swinging a trade for a professional scorer off the bench like Lou Williams could fortify their second unit even more.

Aside from Teague, Boston’s guard lineup off the bench is relatively inexperienced. Romeo Langford, Carsen Edwards, Payton Pritchard, and Tremont Waters are all 22-years-old or younger, and adding another experienced veteran should be a priority at the guard position. Lou Williams fits the profile with nearly 1,800 playoff minutes under his belt in 71 playoff games across his 15-year NBA tenure.

Whether the LA Clippers intend to trade Lou Williams this offseason or not, there is no shortage of potential suitors that would embrace having the shooting guard on their roster.
