De’Aaron Fox: 4 years, $163 million (Sacramento Kings)

De’Aaron Fox is the first of an elite group of youngsters to get a max extension, signing a four-year deal worth $163 million (and a clause to reach the $195.6 million supermax) to stay with the Sacramento Kings. Likely to soon join Fox are Donovan Mitchell of the Utah Jazz and Jayson Tatum of the Boston Celtics.

Fox was expected to be a virtual lock to get this extension, although Mitchell and Tatum are quite a bit further ahead of him on the pecking order. Last season Fox averaged 21.1 points, 6.8 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game while shooting 48.0 percent from the floor and a concerning 29.2 percent from 3-point range.

Things being what they are, the Kings likely didn’t have much choice other than to max-extend the 22-year-old Fox (he’ll turn 23 just before the NBA season starts on Dec. 22nd), but it’s going to be interesting to see if he does live up to this contract in the long run.

He’ll be teammates with rookie Tyrese Haliburton, the 12th overall pick in the draft, and that fit will be fascinating to watch over time as well.

Grade: C+
