Grading all 4 Detroit Pistons picks in the 2020 NBA draft
By Duncan Smith
Detroit Pistons pick No. 16: Isaiah Stewart
This one is straight out of left field. Isaiah Stewart was a pick that nobody outside of the Pistons war room saw coming, especially considering there were players like R.J. Hampton and Saddiq Bey still left. He’s a player who will probably take some effort to talk yourself into, but he does have all those intangible gritty buzzwords that Pistons fans love. The Pistons have a bunch of centers on their roster now, but this selection makes it a virtual certainty that at least one of Thon Maker and Justin Patton will not make the team.
Draft grade: C-
Detroit Pistons pick No. 19: Saddiq Bey
Well, apparently the Pistons did like Saddiq Bey, and they got him at 19 instead of 16. The whole process here is still kind of strange, because Bey wasn’t a lock to still be on the board at 19 while Isaiah Stewart’s name was likely not going to be called for a while yet. However, maybe the Pistons had intel that Stewart was indeed going to get picked by a team after them, and they were comfortable with taking whoever was available between Bey and Hampton. Whatever the case, it looks like the Pistons got both of their guys here, and Bey is a lethal sharpshooter who should contribute right away.
Draft grade: B
Detroit Pistons pick No. 38: Saben Lee
The Detroit Pistons made their final pick of the night at 38 overall, a hyperathletic guard out of Vanderbilt named Saben Lee. As with any second-round pick, his impact will likely be minimal and he’ll provide exciting depth. Hard to get too excited about this one, but there’s nothing to hold against it either.
Draft grade: B-
All in all, it was a crazy night for the Pistons and the outlook is absolutely different than it was at the start, if not necessarily better. And it might be better, but time will tell. For Killian Hayes’ selection alone, we’re pleased with this draft for the Detroit Pistons.
