NBA draft takeaway No. 1 – Troy Weaver is not done yet

After all the dust settles, it appears the Pistons have 11 of the maximum 15 roster spots filled, not including their four draft picks on Wednesday. But with Christian Wood entering free agency and Detroit being one of the few teams with cap space available, it’s nearly unthinkable that the Pistons roster is set.

If we assume that second-round pick Saben Lee takes Jordan Bone’s two-way contract, that leaves one roster slot available. But if reports of Deivedas Syrvidis coming to Detroit are true, the roster is suddenly full again.

Trevor Ariza and Rodney McGruder aren’t going to be part of Weaver’s vision and Ariza, as an expiring contract, could get moved immediately either by being waived or traded.

Then there are the two remaining Pistons who may be valuable to contenders – Derrick Rose and Blake Griffin. Because so few teams have cap space, those making a push for a playoff run will be calling around to teams like Detroit to acquire rotation players without signing new contracts. This is an ideal opportunity for Weaver to acquire additional assets for extra chances in the future, more-talented draft classes.

And given how active Troy Weaver was on draft night, it appears logical that more moves will come to help him shape the roster in a way that will make it his own. For the first time in a long time, Detroit has intriguing options to transform their roster for years to come.
