NBA Draft Preview: What’s the best spot for LaMelo Ball and the rest?
Obi Toppin will attract many teams in this year’s draft, and his size and ability will make him a great pick.
Obi Toppin is a great topic of conversation in this draft. I’m just going to come out and say that he’ll be a Top 5 pick, but I also believe that he could drop behind other draftees like Deni Avdija and Onyeka Okongwu, which puts him in picks 5-10 territory to be drafted by the Pistons, Knicks, Wizards, or Suns.
It’s unlikely that Toppin will fall that late, but if so, the Pistons and Knicks are a destination for anyone at this point, and Toppin could provide the right toppings for these teams. Toppin’s range and knack for dunking will stand out to any of the Top 10 picks.
Leaving Cleveland and the Bulls to choose another player over him is too much air for Toppin who is one of the best players of this draft, however, it would benefit both him and the other team.
Playing in the frontcourt in Cleveland seems doable if the Cavs are willing to make some flexible roster changes with Kevin Love, Andre Drummond, and Tristan Thompson. The same can be said for the Bulls, but the Bulls have to be willing to give up Lauri Markkanen or Wendell Carter Jr. to do so.
Both the Bulls and Cavs look preoccupied, so making Toppin wait for the benefit of his game is better. It actually should be a request from Toppin to go later. Out of the teams, the Wizards seem the most beneficial. Toppin can add to the dynamic of John Wall, Bradley Beal, and more recently, Rui Hachimura, if he wants and if they want, the roster changes that they make can be more impactful and flexible.
