The Boston Celtics were just sort of the NBA Finals last season. They don’t need to change their roster too much. Here are five moves they must make.
The Boston Celtics had another good season in 2019-20. They made the conference finals for the third time in four seasons. The Celtics have made the playoffs for the last six years straight. Apart from 2013-14, they have made the playoffs every season since 2007-08 when they won it all.
It is safe to say that the Celtics have had a sustained run of success. This will likely continue for at least another season given that their young core is still under contract and getting better.
This is lucky considering the Celtics have one of the highest payrolls in the NBA next season at $140 million. However, they are still a piece away from being able to take the next step and get out of the east for the first time since the 2009-10 season.
There are very few question marks about this Celtics roster for next year. They will hopefully have Gordon Hayward back for the entire season which makes them better as a squad. He started getting back to his old self this season after his fractured leg back in 2017-18.
Add to this they have Kemba Walker who did everything he could to keep the Charlotte Hornets in playoff contention basically by himself year in and year out. Now that he is playing for a good team, Walker is still putting up quality numbers in a meaningful way.
Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum continue to develop in their early 20s. They are one of the best duos of the future. The problem for the NBA is that they are already dominating the league now.
