The San Antonio Spurs aren’t known for blockbuster trades, but this might be the offseason where they swing for the fences. We’ll break down 3 major rumors.

There are frequent players in trade rumors and the trade market, and then there are the San Antonio Spurs. The organization doesn’t make a lot of trades, but they generally nail them when they do. As the coming offseason nears, the rest of the NBA should be a bit concerned that the Spurs appear ready to jump into the mix for big moves.

We’re going to break down three of the biggest rumors involving the Spurs, and evaluate whether the organization should pass or pursue each one.

Without further ado, let’s get started on the first.

Pursue: Trade Patty Mills for… something

In Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer’s newest mock draft, he suggests that the Spurs are looking to trade Patty Mills. With just one year and $13.3 million remaining on his contract, Mills could provide both on-court value to a receiving team and salary relief next offseason, or he could be used as a trade chip once again at the trade deadline for a receiving team.

Rather than risking the loss of Mills in the 2021 offseason, getting some value for his expiring contract could go a long way towards increasing the Spurs’ own stockpile. According to O’Connor, teams like the Milwaukee Bucks and Philadelphia 76ers are interested in making a deal, and if the Sixers are the lucky winner of the Patty Mills sweepstakes, they could get Josh Richardson and some other pieces in return.

If this deal is in fact on the table, the San Antonio Spurs should pursue it.
