1. Re-sign Fred VanVleet

Fred VanVleet is the perfect example of a player who was identified as a future prospect by the Raptors and then they developed him into a good player. Vanvleet was not picked in the 2016 draft. Instead, he worked his way onto the team through training camp.

In his first season, VanVleet was assigned and recalled from the G League 16 times. He ended up averaging 2.9 points, 1.1 rebounds, and 0.9 assists in 7.9 minutes per game. He then developed into a key reserve in the 2017-18 season.

VanVleet then developed into a solid piece for the Raptors championship year. He was able to step into the starting lineup as required. He averaged 11.0 points and 4.8 assists per game. However, in the season just gone, VanVleet announced himself as a serious player.

With the loss of Leonard, VanVleet averaged 17.6 points, 6.6 assists, and 1.9 steals in 35.7 minutes per game. Even though he stands 6’1″, VanVleet plays alongside the 6’0″ Kyle Lowry. However, their height does not seem to impact their ability to compete against much taller guards.

VanVleet is only 26 and there should still be some solid development in him. With next season being the last on Lowry’s contract, he will probably be offered a smaller deal than the $30 million he is on. VanVleet is the future of the Raptors at the point guard position and should be paid accordingly.
