Milwaukee Bucks: 5 reasons Giannis Antetokounmpo should re-sign
1. Staying could make him the greatest player in franchise history
In 1971, a phenom by the name of Lew Alcindor out of UCLA guided the Milwaukee Bucks to their first NBA championship. He was named Finals MVP, which went along nicely with the regular season MVP he received that season.
The next day, he announced to the world that he’d converted to Islam and that going forward his name would be Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He would go on to become the NBA’s all-time leader in points scored, a record he still holds to this day. Eventually, he demanded a trade and won five more championships as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers.
While it would be a tall task for Giannis to surpass Kareem for individual basketball greatness, the argument could be made that if he stays in Milwaukee for the remainder of his career, he could be considered the greatest Milwaukee Buck in history. His legacy already includes multiple MVP trophies; the organization is hoping they’ll soon have multiple NBA championships to match.
Kareem’s tenure in Milwaukee ultimately ended in a demand to be traded. He’s a New York native who went to college in Los Angeles. Living in a mid-size Midwestern city just wasn’t a great fit for him. Giannis, on the other hand, was an 18-year-old kid when he arrived in Milwaukee in 2013. He has embraced the city of and they’ve embraced him.
Now he’s a family man with more than just himself to consider when making life-changing decisions. The Bucks organization and the city of Milwaukee have offered Giannis everything they have to offer. Soon they’ll be putting a five-year super-max contract extension in front of him worth over $230 million. That level of commitment deserves the same in return.
