2. Antetokounmpo may not be the man if he goes to a new team

Giannis Antetokounmpo is one of the five best basketball players in the world. No matter what measuring stick is used, there’s no way to take him out of any top five list pundits may compile. However, even if he goes to a team that does not currently have a top-five player, taking the reigns of leadership from a player who’s already established may be easier said than done.

Giannis does not see himself as a complementary piece. Given his skill set and other-worldly athleticism, he certainly shouldn’t. If he goes to an organization like the Miami Heat, who have been rumored to have their eye on him, he’ll have competition for the top spot on the team.

Jimmy Butler just led his team to their first Finals appearance since the breakup of the Heatles, during which he put on a classic performance in Games 3 and 5 that won’t soon be forgotten. Even if Giannis arrives in South Beach with two MVP trophies in tow, it will be hard to convince the players in that locker room that it’s his team now.

The Milwaukee Bucks are without question built around Giannis Antetokounmpo. From the offseason acquisitions they’ve made to the style of play they’ve committed to, everything has centered around him. The front office even went as far as to sign his older brother, Thanasis Antetokounmpo.

Sure, Thanasis had previous NBA experience, but he wasn’t on any team’s radar until Giannis emerged as a superstar. A player with Antetokounmpo’s throwback mentality would have a very difficult time embracing being second fiddle if he were to leave. The easy way around that would be to stay put, where he’s already the man, and make it work.
