Following a recent report, here’s a blockbuster move the New York Knicks could make this offseason to help set up their future.

In addition to the potential for a pre-Christmas start to the 2020-21 NBA season, followers of the New York Knicks may also be aware of another recent development that will affect their team this coming season.

A report from Ian Begley of SNY detailed the Knicks’ plans to potentially acquire one or more undesirable contracts this season along with a combination of draft picks and young players in order to solidify their current rebuild.

The following excerpt from Begley’s piece was notable:

"The Knicks, who told teams recently they’d be open to taking on a bad contract, have not made decisions on any players with options yet."

Currently, the Knicks have a team option on the contracts of Bobby Portis, Wayne Ellington, Taj Gibson and Reggie Bullock for the coming season. If the Knicks decide not to pick up all four contracts, this would allow the Knicks to possess around $60 million in salary cap this offseason.

Therefore, the Knicks brass needs to work out a way in which they can accommodate one of the more undesirable contracts in the league, while also finding a way to develop their roster, both for the present and the future.

Given the makeup of the Knicks roster, this proposed deal requires the intervention of a third team in order to suit the interests of each party. With this in mind, here’s a look at the current predicament of the other two teams involved in the transaction.
