Atlanta Hawks: Buy or sell each pending 2020-21 free agent
Damian Jones – Sell
Sensing a theme here? For Damian Jones, being listed in the “Sell” category should feel familiar after the ending of his Golden State Warriors tenure, though it probably hurts just the same.
Jones started 27 games during his first season in Atlanta, averaging 5.6 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. He demonstrated some strong efficiency at the rim on the offensive end, hitting 75.9 percent of his shots within three feet of the basket.
Beyond that, Jones didn’t do much. This was the first year he’s attempted a three-pointer and he managed to hit two of nine he attempted, but that’s certainly an area of long-term growth for Jones. He also isn’t much of a defender on a team where everyone needs to be able to defend at least a little bit to cover up for Trae Young’s shortcomings.
Jones is still young, but he has a roster crunch working against him. The Hawks now have a plethora of centers under contract, including Clint Capela, Dewayne Dedmon, and Bruno Fernando. Teams don’t keep four centers on the roster and Atlanta should be no different.
Jones should get another shot in this league. But it shouldn’t be with the Hawks, who will likely renounce the restricted free agent.
