Utah Jazz: 5 offseason roster moves they must make
2. Move on from Mike Conley
Since trading a large number of assets to obtain Conley, it has been difficult to get excited about the veteran and his fit with the Jazz. Early in the preseason it was obvious that Conley was out of sync with the rest of the starters on the team.
Given that the 32 year old had averaged 21.1 points and 6.4 assists per game the season before with the Grizzlies, the Jazz would have expected great things. What they got was a player who only averaged 14.4 points and 4.4 assists per game.
While this is still decent production, Conley is due $34.5 million next season, if the Jazz decide to exercise his option. It is doubtful that they will do this as they can get these levels of production for less than half this cost.
The other issue is that Conley only played 47 games last season which also should not encourage the Jazz front office to exercise this option. They need a player with experience and a pass first mentality who can help generate offense.
They also risk not being able to sign Clarkson who is four years younger and is a better fit with the team. The Jazz are also needing to fill several other key backup roles which they will be able to do with the extra cap room.
